Tymoshenko, Lutsenko imprisonment to influence evaluation of parliamentary elections, says MEP

Members of the European Parliament doubt that the upcoming parliamentary elections in Ukraine will be democratic in the light of the fact that the opposition leaders have not been allowed to take part in them, Member of the European Parliament Rebecca Harms has said.

"I think the biggest threat to the supporters of the signing of the Association Agreement with Ukraine is our possible refusal to admit the existence of the supremacy of law in Ukraine. We will monitor the election process, but as I have said earlier, I don't see any chance to speak about fair elections," Harms said at a video linkup conference at the Institute of World Policy in Kyiv on Wednesday.

She added that Ukraine ignores such European values as the supremacy of law and an independent judiciary.

According to the MEP, some of Ukrainian opposition leaders cannot run for the elections as they are in prison, and this makes it difficult for Europe to declare the elections democratic.

Harms added that the future of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement would depend on the evaluation of the parliamentary elections.

On October 11, 2011, Pechersky District Court in Kyiv sentenced Tymoshenko to seven years in prison for abuse of office in signing gas contracts with Russia in 2009.

The former prime minister is serving her prison term in the Kachanivska penal colony in Kharkiv.

Kyiv's Pechersky District Court found Lutsenko guilty of a number of counts of abuse of office and sentenced him to four years in prison on February 27, 2012. Lutsenko was charged with the extension of an investigative case concerning Davydenko, the driver of former SBU First Deputy Chief Volodymyr Satsiuk, as part of an investigation into the poisoning of then presidential candidate Viktor Yuschenko on August 17, 2012 by Pechersky Court. The court sentenced Lutsenko to two years in prison.

The parliamentary elections will be held in Ukraine on October 28, 2012.
