Poroshenko welcomes U.S. energy sanctions against Russia
Ukrainian MP and leader of the European Solidarity party, Petro Poroshenko, hailed Washington's significant decision to tighten sanctions on Russia's oil and gas sector. He also urged Ukrainian authorities to halt the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline, as he wrote on Facebook.
"If we want to win, we must strike the aggressor where it hurts most – at the core of their temporary ability to replenish military arsenals and continue waging an aggressive war against all of us," Poroshenko said.
"The formula of their gas and oil is one of blackmail, subjugation, killing, and bloodshed. There are no other molecules in their resources! The more restrictions we impose on Putin's ability to generate revenue from the oil and gas sector, the weaker our common enemy will become and the stronger Ukraine's position will grow," Poroshenko declared.
He stressed that Ukraine, like the United States, should lead by example in countering Russian energy influence. This is precisely the focus of European Solidarity's legislative initiative to halt the transit of Russian oil across Ukraine.
"Every day, the Druzhba pipeline transports 300,000 barrels of Russian oil. At the current price for Russian Urals crude, this amounts to over $20 million per day, or almost $1.9 million per hour. Each day of delay in halting Russian oil transit means tens of millions of dollars flowing into Russia's coffers. For 2025 alone, Russia plans to earn $7.5 billion solely from oil sales via Ukrainian transit. When you add the $5.5 billion Russia earned from gas and the $7.5 billion from oil transit, that totals $13 billion – exactly 10% of Russia's military budget," Poroshenko stated during a briefing.
He called on all parliamentary factions to support the bill banning the transit of Russian oil.
