Ukraine's affiliation with NATO is strategic goal, right time must come for this – Sybiha
It is difficult to talk about the possibility of Kyiv's membership in NATO when military operations are underway on the territory of the country, since some countries fear that this will mean their direct involvement in the war - Ukraine does not seek this, said Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.
“We are a country against which Russian aggression is being waged. Indeed, it is difficult to talk about the possibility of a country's membership in NATO when military operations are underway on its territory. This is the position of some NATO countries, who believe that this may entail their direct involvement in the war. Ukraine does not strive for this,“ Sybiha said at a briefing in Brussels, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.
Sybiha stressed that Ukraine speaks “about our membership in NATO as a strategic goal.”
He also noted that the two previous NATO summits in Vilnius and Washington “clearly confirmed the irreversibility of Ukraine's membership in NATO.”
“The partners share this, we see this support. But the appropriate time really has to come for this,” the minister said.
He also said that bilateral security agreements with partners “strengthen us” on the way to NATO, and treaties are not an alternative to NATO.
“This is indicated in every agreement. This is not an alternative at all. This is a road that strengthens us, these are agreements that allow us to plan strategically,” Sybiha stressed.
According to him, each agreement contains “specific figures, specific obligations” of partners to help Ukraine. Sybiha added that this allows Kyiv to “strengthen on the way to NATO.”
A meeting of the foreign ministers of the Alliance member countries is taking place at the NATO headquarters in Brussels (Belgium) on December 3-4. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has arrived in Brussels, where he will hold a number of meetings with partners from Europe, the United States and NATO, and will take part in a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council.
