Court takes into custody MP Shevchenko, suspected of treason
On Friday, Pechersky District Court of Kyiv chose a measure of restraint in the form of uncontested arrest for 60 days for MP of Ukraine Yevhen Shevchenko, suspected of treason, the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) said.
The court made this decision, thus satisfying the petition of the prosecutor's office.
The MP is suspected of committing treason under Part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of up to 15 years of imprisonment with seizure of property.
Earlier, the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) notified about the suspicion of the MP of treason. It was noted that he discredited the current government, distorting facts and events in the country, publicly called for changing the borders of the territory and state border of Ukraine.
The investigation also established contacts between the MP and representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus. He repeatedly visited this country, where he met with representatives of business and political structures and even with the self-proclaimed president. Referring to this meeting, the MP spread the idea of the absence of a threat of attack by Russian troops from the territory of Belarus, etc.
As a source told Interfax-Ukraine, the MP in question was Yevhen Shevchenko.
