EU Ambassador: I think we to provide lion's share of promised $50 bln from frozen Russian assets

The EU, together with the G7 countries, is looking for a way to provide a $50 billion loan to Ukraine using frozen Russian assets, Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová has said.

"Well, I think that there is definitely a commitment from the EU to continue its major support. I mean, we are the biggest financial supporter of Ukraine in this war. By far. On the macro-financial side. And we will continue that. There is definitely a commitment, and I think we will do a lion's share of the promised 50 billion. And we are right now looking for ways to do it, together, in partnership with the G7," the ambassador said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

The ambassador suggested that the discussions on $50 billion are still ongoing, and it is worth waiting for official announcements in the coming days.

Commenting on Hungary's position and whether the country's position could become a potential obstacle to receiving a loan, Mathernová noted that in the case of the EUR 1.4 billion euro, for example, "there was no block from anyone."

"Because it was the frozen assets channeled through the EU budget, where the institutions can act. And I think that we may have a similar solution also on macro-financial assistance. Let's see," the ambassador said.
