Modular town will be built near Khmelnytsky NPP for Zaporizhia NPP workers with Swedish aid – Energoatom head

The Swedish government has decided to build a modular town near Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant for workers of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhia nuclear power plant who left Energodar, reported acting chairman of the board of Energoatom Petro Kotin.

"On the part of the Swedish government, we have a decision on provision with humanitarian assistance - there will be a modular town at Khmelnytsky NPP specifically for those displaced from Zaporizhia NPP,” Kotin said during an event dedicated to the second anniversary of the occupation of Zaporizhia NPP by the Russian aggressor, which occurred on March 4, 2022.

He clarified that this town will be for those who will complete the construction of units at Khmelnytsky NPP, as well as for operating personnel.

According to him, now Energoatom is trying to make maximum use of the workers who left Zaporizhia NPP and bring them out of forced downtime, but at the same time, questions arise about providing them with normal living conditions.

“We are employing people at our other nuclear power plants, including Khmelnytsky NPP. There are already 333 people from Zaporizhia NPP working there, and in April we have the task of increasing their number to 600 people, and by the end of the year there will be a thousand,” Kotin explained.

As reported, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko noted that in order to compensate for the loss of energy capacity due to the war with Russia, Ukraine plans to begin construction of new units at the Khmelnytsky NPP site in 2024. The matter concerns two Soviet-style VVER-1000 units, as well as two AP-1000 units from the American company Westinghouse. Ukraine will become the first country in Europe where nuclear units of this type will be built.
