Ukraine has no intension to extend gas transportation contract after 2024, but ready to negotiate with EU states

Ukraine is not going to renew the contract for the transportation of Russian natural gas to Europe after 2024, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers told Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.

"The position of the Ukrainian side is clear: the transportation contract ends at the end of this year, we are not going to negotiate with the Russians and extend the contract, and the Prime Minister of Ukraine informed his Slovak counterpart on this," the press service said.

However, the press service said, "Ukraine can talk with a European country (EU member) about using its gas transportation network."

The transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine's gas transportation system (GTS) in 2023 decreased by 28.4% (by 5.813 billion cubic meters) compared to 2022, to 14.647 billion cubic meters, according to data from the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU).

An agreement between Naftogaz Ukrainy and Gazprom for organizing transportation, a transport agreement between Naftogaz and GTSOU, as well as an inter-operator agreement between GTSOU and Gazprom were signed on December 30, 2019. The contract provides for transit of 40 billion cubic meters of gas per year in 2021-2024.
