Energoatom starts inspecting Westinghouse fuel using own inspection stand

Atomremontservice, a division of national nuclear generating company Energoatom, has started inspecting Westinghouse nuclear fuel (fuel assemblies W/WR) using own fuel inspection and repair stand.

The press service of the state-owned enterprise reported that Atomremontservice carried out two fuel inspections. This allowed saving around UAH 7.5 million.

In June 2017, eight fuel assemblies WR at reactor five of Zaporizhia nuclear power plant (NPP) were inspected.

"Atomremontservice sets the following tasks for the near future: the completion of the fuel inspection and repair stand to ensure the possibility of controlling of fuel assemblies A; improvement of the stand design in removing debris from fuel assemblies; scheduled fuel inspections at NPP reactors during long-term overhauls without affecting the terms of the overhauls, "the press service said.

Energoatom recalls that in 2014 Atomremontservice staff was trained how to work with the fuel inspection and repair stand, and in 2015-2016 together with specialists from Westinghouse they took part in the fuel inspection at reactor 3 of Yuzhnoukrainsk NPP.

Energoatom is the operator of all four Ukrainian-based operating nuclear power plants, which have 15 VVER reactors with an overall generating capacity of 13.835 gigawatts.
