Ukrainian, Hungarian PMs agree on building road to Hungarian-Ukrainian border by 2020

Ukraine and Hungary intend to build a road to the Hungarian-Ukrainian border by 2020 and work on the introduction of joint border control.

The press service of Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has reported that Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman at a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban proposed to hold a new meeting of the commission for trans-border cooperation.

"The Ukrainian and Hungarian prime minister also promised to build a road to the Hungarian-Ukrainian border by 2020," the press service said.

Under Groysman's proposal the sides decided to order foreign ministers jointly with heads of border and customs services to work on the introduction of joint border control and the possibility of improving the operation of checkpoints to provide for comfort crossing the border.

Groysman thanked Hungary for prolongation of the project "Effective and Safe Border between Hungary and Ukraine" in 2017.

The Ukrainian prime minister said that the number of permits without paying road fees for Ukraine haulers in 2017 should be increased. He urged the Hungarian prime minister to consider this issue.

Groysman and Orban made arrangements that the governments of the two countries would soon create and approve a calendar plan to implement the top priority joint projects and start implementing it at once.

The Ukrainian prime minister thanked Hungary for providing a EUR 50 million loan to develop border infrastructure.

Groysman proposed that after signing the financial agreement the countries would at once switch to the practical implementation of joint projects. Among them are building an orbital road around Berehove and reconstruction of the Berehove-Mukacheve road, expansion and modernization of the Beregsurany-Luzhanka (Astei) checkpoint, building the new checkpoint Hagyhodos-Velyka Palad and introduction of joint border and customs control at it, building a new bridge across the Tisa River near the Chop-Zahony checkpoint and launch traffic movement between Dyida in Zakarpattia region and Beregdaroc in Hungary.
