Hungary increases quotas for Ukrainian truckers

The Ukrainian-Hungarian Joint Commission on Road Transport has agreed to extend the quota of free movement and provide Ukrainian haulers in 2016 with an additional 1,000 bilateral and 500 transit permits, the Ministry of Infrastructure has said after a committee meeting in Budapest.

"This will enable domestic carriers to save more than EUR400,000 by the end of 2016. We have a total of 15,000 permits for free transit and 2,000 for implementation of bilateral agreements by the end of the year," deputy minister Yuriy Lavreniuk said.

He said the Hungarian side initially advocated adherence to traffic rules on a parity basis, focusing on the fact that in the first half of the year Hungarian carriers used no more than 30% of permits, crossing the border with Ukraine about 4,200 times, while Ukrainian carriers performed more than 19,300 trips.

The ministry notes the specified number of permits is not final for 2016, and each party reserves the right to initiate an increase in their number, while the next meeting of the bilateral commission is scheduled for October 2016.
