Ukraine will continue integration into single European energy market in 2016 - Poroshenko

Ukraine in 2015 thanks to integration into the single European energy market managed to overcome dependence on Russian gas and will continue this process in 2016, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has stated.

"Summing up the past year, I should mention energy independence from Russia, which has been already realized. Even in the wildest dreams we could not imagine that we will ever overcome dependence on Russian gas," Poroshenko said at a press conference in Kyiv.

He noted that Ukraine last year bought two-time more gas in Europe than in Russia.

"This process began last year and will continue this year," the head of state said about the integration into the single European energy market.

As reported, imports of natural gas by Ukraine from Europe in 2015 more than doubled, to 10.3 billion cubic meters from 5.1 billion cubic meters in 2014, and the main route with a share of more than 94% was gas supply through Slovakia.
