EU ready to assist via financing, selecting anti-corruption prosecutors in Ukraine – Tombinski

Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jan Tombinski has said that the European Union has always staunchly supported the establishment of a trustworthy and operational Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office.

"The EU Delegation has attentively followed and continues to monitor the process of establishing an independent Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office. In this context, we have raised valid concerns with regard to the integrity of the overall selection process and expect them to be addressed," Tombinski said in a statement given to Interfax-Ukraine in light of media reports alleging that EU has refused to finance the establishment of the anti-corruption prosecution agencies in Ukraine.

Tombinski stressed that the EU stands ready to assist in the selection process for the agency, including by financing the selection process for anti-corruption prosecutors.

"We believe that such assistance will contribute to the overall transparency of the selection process and to the professional and reliable outcome of this process," he said.

Tombinski added that the version of events promulgated some Ukrainian media outlets in respect to correspondence between the EU Delegation and the Selection Committee are confusing and erroneous.
