Ukraine ready for legal war with Russia - Yatseniuk

Ukraine is ready for war with Russia through law means, in particular, on the conditions of debt restructuring, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has said.

"We're ready for the legal war with the Russian Federation," he said at a joint press briefing with Finance Minister Natalie Jaresko in Kyiv on Thursday.

Yatseniuk said that Ukraine has a number of disputes with Russia.

"Two basic court disputes at European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and the date of listening of Russia explanations under the mentioned disputes set by the court – January 1, 2016. We urge Russia not to be slow and not to appeal to court as they have already done that with a request to postpone the terms of consideration of this case," he said.

Yatseniuk said that there have been a number of commercial and arbitration disputes against Russia, including by state companies that sustained losses and lost their property as a result of the Russian aggression in Crimea and Donbas.

He stressed that Russia still has the opportunity to join the club of creditors and accept a proposal on restructuring the Ukrainian national debt.

"One more time I would like to underline an opportunity [for Russia] to accept the proposal and thus become a part of the club of creditors: to accept the Ukrainian proposal [on debt restructuring] and step by step to pay the debt back under the conditions under which the rest of the creditors could receive a part of the debt and under the conditions to which the creditors agreed to write down such debt," Yatseniuk said.
