AMC starts checks on networks and suppliers over rising food costs

The Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMC) has began an investigating the activities of the largest retail chains in the country, their suppliers and their food producers to check their compliance with legislation on economic competition protection.

The investigation was launched due to the increase in food prices in late February

"If the violations of the legislation on economic competition protection are revealed, the committee will take measures in accordance with applicable law," reads the statement issued by the committee.

The committee also said that there is no food deficit according to the balance of supply and demand for basic foodstuffs, which was developed by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

As reported, during the hryvnia devaluation in February the demand for certain domestic products increased, in particular, cereals, sugar, sunflower oil, which led to a substantial increase in their prices and to a temporary deficit.
