Vegetable harvest in Ukraine in 2013 to come to 9.3 m tonnes, says Agricultural Ministry
Ukraine in 2013 harvested 9.3 million tonnes of vegetables and 22 million tonnes of potatoes, the Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food has said.
"This year Ukraine has harvested a high yield of vegetables - 9.3 million tonnes, and potatoes - 22 million tonnes. The main producers of these goods remain private farms," the press service said, citing Agricultural Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk.
According to him, to ensure crop storage and stable prices for vegetables in the winter and spring period, it is necessary to build new vegetable storage facilities.
The minister said that in the next two or three years the capacity of the vegetable storage facilities in the country would increase by 400,000 tonnes, to 1.42 million tonnes.
According to the ministry, the current capacity of the fruit and vegetable storage facilities in Ukraine is 2.7 million tonnes, including those for potatoes - 1.3 million tonnes, vegetables - 1.02 million tonnes, and fruit - 366,000 tonnes.
Earlier, the ministry forecast that 16 fridges to store 140,000 tonnes of fruit and berries would be commissioned by 2015.
