EU waiting for date of elections in Kyiv, five single-seat constituencies, says Fule

Brussels has said it is waiting for Ukraine to decide on a date this year for elections in Kyiv, as well as for by-elections at the five single-seat constituencies that failed to return MPs at last year's parliamentary elections.

"We also expect that the date will be determined this year for [the elections to parliament in] the five constituencies and for the elections in Kyiv," European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule said at the press conference in Luxembourg on Monday following a meeting of the EU-Ukraine Cooperation Council.

In addition, he suggested that Kyiv has to take into account the recent conclusions by the Venice Commission to resolve other outstanding reform issues, in particular the reform of the functioning of the General Prosecutor's Office.

Fule also spoke about the commission's findings concerning the elections.

"Priority attention should be given to the Electoral Code in order to ensure a uniform procedure for elections of all types," he said.

The European commissioner called on Ukraine's Prime Minister Mykola Azarov to spare no effort to create the necessary conditions for the dialogue and cooperation on the necessary reforms and actions.

"I want to make a similar appeal to the opposition - to work constructively on the European agenda, especially in the decisive months that remain," he said.

In addition, Fule confirmed the EU's commitment to the relaxation of visa requirements for Ukrainians.

He urged Ukraine to resolve the remaining issues to complete the implementation of the first stage of the visa facilitation process, in particular, to adopt laws against discrimination and corruption. The recommendations of the commission should be heeded, the European commissioner said.
