Ukraine to meet half-way regarding energy supplies via Turkey, says Kaskiv

Ukraine is ready to meet it partners half-way regarding the bypassing of the Turkish Straits by its tankers with liquefied natural gas for the Ukrainian LNG-terminal, Head of the State Agency for Investment and National Projects Management Vladyslav Kaskiv has reported.

"We're ready to take additional measures to satisfy all of the concerns of the Turkish side. There is no emergency, this is an absolutely normal dialogue that we're holding with the Turkish party," he told the journalists on Thursday.

Kaskiv also added that Ukraine is ready to take extra measures to accompany tankers "with Turkish pilots and everything that the Turkish ambassador drew attention to."

As reported, Turkish Ambassador to Ukraine Mehmet Samsar said that Turkey understands Ukraine's plans to diversify its energy supply sources, but tankers with liquefied natural gas for the Ukrainian LNG terminal should find routes bypassing the Turkish Straits.

"We're concerned that tankers with LNG (for the Ukrainian LNG terminal) in our straits could be dangerous for people and navigation," he said. We cannot jeopardize Turkish cities. We think that if the tankers bypass the Turkish Straits, that would be the best solution."

Ukraine and Turkey previously considered the possibility of cooperation in the construction of a LNG terminal for handling liquefied gas on Turkish territory. In particular, in autumn 2012 Turkey proposed that Ukraine join in the construction of a new terminal by the Sea of Marmara.
