UN Court finds Russia violates Financing of Terrorism Convention; no compensation awarded – media

On January 31, the UN International Court of Justice ruled in the case of Ukraine against Russia and found Russia violated some parts of the UN Convention for the Prevention of the Financing of Terrorism because it did not investigate financial support for separatists in eastern Ukraine in 2014, Radio Liberty said in Wednesday.

Despite this, the court did not award compensation, as requested by the Ukrainian side. The court also refused to make a specific decision on the probable responsibility of Russia for the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over territory not controlled by Ukraine on July 17, 2014, as Ukraine requested.

This is a decision in a 2017 case in which Ukraine accuses Russia of financing militants in 2014 and discrimination against the multi-ethnic community of Crimea after its occupation. Ukraine also accuses Russia of violating conventions against discrimination and financing terrorism. Ukraine is seeking to have the court order the Russian Federation to pay reparations for attacks and crimes in the east of the country, including for the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

According to the publication, on February 2, the same court will decide on the admissibility of Ukraine’s complaint against the Russian Federation about "distorting the concept of genocide."
