Ukraine, Canada, Sweden, UK after talks with Iran on UIA plane crash: Iranian side continues ignoring our claims
The International Group for the Coordination of Assistance to Victims of flight PS752 (representatives of Ukraine, Great Britain, Canada and Sweden) held talks with Iranian officials regarding responsibility for the downing of flight PS752 of Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) on January 8, 2020, the Iranian side continues to ignore the claims, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported.
“The Coordination Group takes seriously its commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes. Since 2020, the Group has made multiple attempts to resolve this matter through negotiations, and in September 2023 Iran finally agreed to meet with all members of the Group for discussions. Accordingly, representatives from the four members of the Coordination Group met with Iranian officials this week to discuss the Islamic Republic of Iran’s state responsibility for the downing of Flight PS752,” the message reads.
The Coordination Group said that the Group’s focus in discussions was Iran’s responsibility for its violations of international law and the need for Iran to make full reparations for the injury caused by the downing of Flight PS752.
“For the group, full reparations means more than financial compensation,” it said.
“The Coordination Group regrets that Iran remains unwilling to engage meaningfully with our position and continues to disregard our claims. Based on the discussions, which took place this week, the Group considers that our respective positions are too far apart to be reconciled through negotiations,” the Group stressed.
Thus, the Group stated that the Coordination Group will continue to pursue action to resolve this dispute in accordance with international law, including at the International Court of Justice.
As reported, in June, Ukraine and other members of the international coordination group filed a lawsuit against Iran in the International Court of Justice for the downing of the flight PS752 of Ukraine International Airlines on January 8, 2020.
The UIA Boeing 737-800 passenger plane, which was supposed to operate flight PS 752 on the Tehran-Kyiv route, was shot down near the Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran immediately after takeoff early in the morning on January 8, 2020. There were 167 passengers and nine crew members onboard. They all died. Among the dead there were 11 citizens of Ukraine (including nine crew members), 82 citizens of Iran, 63 citizens of Canada, 10 citizens of Sweden, four citizens of Afghanistan, three citizens of Germany and three citizens of Great Britain.
On January 11, Iranian authorities admitted that Boeing was shot down by the Iranian military mistakenly. Later, commander of Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Amir Ali Hajizadeh said that took full responsibility for the crash of the Ukrainian plane.
