Ministry of Veterans invites NATO Office to implement transition program from military career to civilian life in Ukraine – Laputina

The Ministry of Veterans Affairs has provided the NATO Office with proposals for the implementation of a transition program from a military career to civilian life in Ukraine, said Minister Yulia Laputina.

"In the leading armies of the world, according to NATO standards, there is a successful system of transition from military career to civilian life. That is, from the time a person starts recruiting, he should already know what will be in 5, 10, 15 years. And then when he is already discharged from the service, he has an understanding of how he can get a mortgage, what kind of medical coverage and so on. This is the so-called ‘way of the veteran,’" Laputina said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

When asked when such a system will work in Ukraine, the Minister noted that the ministry began working on this even before the large-scale war.

"Since the Alliance opened its Office here on this topic for the Ukrainian military, a lot of training has been done, efforts have been devoted for years to theoretical training, but few direct decisions have been made, unfortunately. Now we have also provided the NATO Office with our proposals on the 'veteran's way' and invite them to join us in putting it into practice, because we really need it," Laputina said.

The minister also lamented that the war had changed some plans, but the ministry continues to pursue a program about transitioning from a military career to civilian life.

"In fact, we need to know what a veteran will do after the army. Recognizing the burden on the Department of Defense, we are ready today to work out the transition mechanism so that it can be launched immediately after we win," the official summed up.
