Govt to provide population in war zones with free food kits

Until the end of martial law, the Government of Ukraine will provide, free of charge, sets of long-term storage food products to the population of regions where active hostilities against Russian invaders are being waged.

The Cabinet of Ministers adopted the corresponding resolution No. 328 at a meeting on March 20.

According to the decree, the Ministry of Economy is authorized to establish the volume of purchases of foodstuffs and packaging for their packaging based on ten million people for subsequent gratuitous distribution to the population. Also, the department will be able to approve the composition and volume of food packages and determine the regional military administrations that will receive the specified food assistance.

The document also instructs the regional military administrations to ensure the processing of grain into flour and cereals at the enterprises of the region with compensation to their owners for the costs incurred, as well as to distribute food kits on their own territory.

"When distributing food products to the population free of charge, ensure the issuance of the established volumes per person, in the volumes specified in the appendix, with a tolerance of +/-20%," the document prescribes.

In turn, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, JSC Ukrzaliznytsia and Ukrposhta must deliver the appropriate food rations for the population of the territories from the combat zones free of charge.

As reported, by March 4, already 130 Ukrainian food producers and business representatives have united to produce 1 million food packages for people from vulnerable categories due to the Russian invasion, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Roman Leschenko said.

On February 28, the Ministry of Social Policy announced the production by Ukrainian food producers of 1 million food packages for people with disabilities, elderly people living alone, families with many children, persons from low-mobility categories and social institutions.

Regional social services will ensure the collection of needs and the delivery of products to recipients.

The sets consist of a variety of cereals, ready-made dry breakfasts, canned meat, meat and vegetable tinned products, pasta, sugar, condensed milk, butter, and various types of packaged biscuits.
