Poroshenko proposes adopting law on accountability for non-recognition of Holodomor and Holocaust

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called for the adoption of a law introducing accountability for the non-recognition of the Holodomor and the Holocaust as genocide.

"I think it's time for us to adopt a law on accountability for not recognizing these two unprecedentedly horrible tragedies [the Holodomor and the Holocaust]. Why? Because those who live after us should observe the law of Ukraine on recognizing the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people," he said in Kyiv on Saturday during an event in memory of the victims of famines in Ukraine.

Poroshenko said that the descendants should know that it was not just an artificial famine, but a carefully planned famine.

"Moreover, it was genocide, by all the signs that are enshrined in the UN Convention of December 9, 1984. Everyone on all continents should realize that not recognizing the Holodomor is as immoral as denying the Holocaust," he added.

He recalled that 14 countries at the level of parliaments had recognized the Holodomor as genocide and that Ukrainian diplomats continue to bring truth to the peoples of the entire world.

"In March this year, the Assembly of Portugal recognized the Holodomor as genocide. A respective draft resolution was also submitted to the U.S. Congress in early November... We thank our American friends and partners and expect an effective vote on Capitol Hill," Poroshenko said.
