Kaskiv has not admitted guilt 'legally'

Former Head of the State Agency for Investment and National Projects of Ukraine Vladyslav Kaskiv has not admitted his guilt legally, but his first testimony actually testifies to this, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko has said.

"Legally it's not admission of his guilt," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Wednesday, November 1.

At the same time, he stressed that the testimony given by Kaskiv on Wednesday morning gives grounds to say that this is actually admission of his guilt.

According to international law, the Ukrainian prosecutor noted, the Ukrainian side informed the Panamanian law enforcement agencies that Kaskiv will be held accountable only for the crime under which he was extradited, and if there are any new episodes, Ukraine will send repeated appeals to the Panamanian side.

"This is not an agreement. This is a confirmation of Ukraine's international obligations, a standard guarantee in the course of extradition. There are no other agreements with Mr. Kaskiv or his lawyers," Lutsenko said.

He also added that at present there was no reason to say that "Panama wants to somehow help officials suspected of corruption."

Lutsenko stressed that the fact that Kaskiv paid the full amount of damage caused to the state fully confirms the validity of the indictment.

Speaking about compensation for the damage inflicted on the state by Kaskiv, he said that he had received a document from the main department of the State Treasury Service of Ukraine with a notification that UAH 7.471 million received from Kaskiv had been transferred to the budget. According to Lutsenko, this indicates the full compensation by Kaskiv of the damage caused to the state.
