Blast wounding MP confirms need to strengthen law enforcement in Ukraine - Gerashchenko

An explosion in the Solomiansky district of Kyiv, in which two people were killed, is a challenge to law enforcement forces and confirms the need for their strengthening, Verkhovna Rada First Deputy Head Iryna Gerashchenko has said.

"This is a serious challenge to all law enforcement structures. Impunity generates impunity," she wrote on her Facebook page on Thursday.

She recalled murders and assassination attempts in the capital, a breakthrough of the state border, smoke bombs brought to parliament, disorder in court and shootings in various cities and villages of the country.

"All this requires an immediate and professional response, the strengthening of law enforcement agencies and the return of professional people, primarily investigators, who are able not only to take selfies, but also to work hard to solve crimes," the politician said.

She said that the country needed to prevent crimes, not just report on them.

Gerashchenko wished speedy recovery to those injured in the explosion and expressed condolences to the families of those who died.

As reported, two people were killed and three more, including Radical Party MP Ihor Mosiychuk and political analyst Vitaliy Bala, were injured in an explosion outside the building of the Espreso TV channel late on October 25. Both of them were hospitalized and underwent surgery. Those who were killed are two police officers - Mosiychuk's security guard, Ruslan Kushnir, who died on his way to hospital, and local resident Mykhailo Mormel.

The explosion was qualified as a terrorist attack. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is overseeing the investigation.
