The U.S. Embassy will pay attention to the investigation into the case opened by the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine regarding embezzlement of funds during the construction of the Neutron Source nuclear facility, U.S. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch has stated.

"We did not know anything about this, but thank you very much for telling us about this case. We will pay attention to it," she said at a briefing in Kharkiv, asked whether she knew about the progress of the investigation into this case.

She also noted that it is very important for the United States how the money of American taxpayers issued in the framework of cooperation with Ukraine is spent.

"We value our cooperation with Kharkiv region, as well as with the whole of Ukraine. We are certainly interested in how the money of American taxpayers is spent. Therefore we want the money that comes here to Ukraine is spent in the way that was envisaged," the official said.

As reported, in April 2010 the then President Viktor Yanukovych during a visit to the United Stated promised Ukraine would get rid of highly enriched uranium using technical and financial assistance from the United States.
