Poroshenko holds talks with Guterres

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres discussed the possibility of active UN involvement in efforts to settle the situation in Donbas at talks in New York City, the Ukrainian presidential press service said.

"The president of Ukraine underscored that only a full-fledged peacekeeping mission with a comprehensive mandate would help achieve the main goal, namely restore peace in Donbas... The parties also observed that such a mission's placement should proceed in strict compliance with the fundamental peacekeeping principles of the UN," a report posted on the Ukrainian president's website said.

In the context of the fulfillment of the UN General Assembly resolution on the situation with human rights in Crimea, Poroshenko emphasized the necessity of taking additional measures by the international community to force Russia to fulfill the abovementioned document.

"The president thanked the UN for the provision of the humanitarian assistance to the internally displaced persons and to the affected civilians in Donbas. The head of state urged the UN to join the process of liberation of hostages," the report said.

Poroshenko and Guterres also discussed ways to step up Ukrainian officials' involvement in the work of UN agencies.
