Sale proceeds from "Kurchenko's oil" should be included in Ukraine's 2016 state budget

The head of Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) Yuriy Lutsenko has said he hopes money from the sale of "Kurchenko's oil" – oil products, which were confiscated from disgraced former Ukrainian businessman Serhiy Kurchenko, an ally of disgraced former President Viktor Yanukovych who fled Ukraine in early 2014 – are returned to the state budget by the end of 2016.

"The so-called "Kurchenko's oil" is on the minds of many Ukrainian lawmakers and ordinary citizens. I have met with the investigative group and with various people involved in the matter. Our opinion is that money earned from the sale – agreed upon with the government – of Kurchenko's oil should be transferred to the state budget this year," Lutsenko said during a briefing in Odesa on Thursday.

Lutsenko said the matter is "priority number one."

"Priority number two is to discern whether laws were broken by various state officials and commercial structures handling this arrested oil. In my opinion, everyone understands that money [earned from the sale of the oil] should be returned," Lutsenko said.
