Kyiv says it has reached 'critical moment' in renaming of populated areas

Ukraine has now renamed more than a half of the populated areas falling under the law "On the Condemnation of the Communist and National-Socialist (Nazi) Totalitarian Regimes in Ukraine and Banning the Propaganda of Their Symbols."

"De-communization continues, and the fact that we have reached a critical moment in the renaming of populated areas, and new names have been given to more than half of those that fall under the de-communization legislation, shows that the process is irreversible. Although the implementation of the results that have been achieved requires efforts from each of us," Volodymyr Vyatrovych, the head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, said.

According to the institute, 299 populated areas remain to be renamed since the Verkhovna Rada voted to rename 361 populated areas and 14 districts on May 12.

"The next step should be to rename the remaining 299 populated areas, specifically, Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovohrad. So the map of Ukraine can get rid of the traces of totalitarian toponymy in the very near future," Vyatrovych said.
