Supreme Court confirms lawfulness of appointment of NBU head

The Supreme Court of Ukraine on December 1 did not satisfy the claim to revise the ruling of the higher administrative court under a claim of MP Yuriy Karmazin and lawyer Natalia Tselovalnychenko against Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Valeriya Gontareva regarding the lawfulness of her appointment as NBU head.

"Hearing the arguments of the sides, the Supreme Court of Ukraine decided not to satisfy the claim. The Supreme Court says that its decision is final and cannot be overturned," the regulator said on its website.

The NBU said that the procedure for appointing NBU head in June 2014 fully complied with Ukrainian law.

As reported, in August 2015, higher administrative court of Ukraine rejected the claim of MP Karmazin and lawyer Tselovalnychenko to Poroshenko and Gontareva as a third party.

The plaintiffs tried to prove the illegality of appointing Gontareva as head of the National Bank due to a lack of experience in leadership positions in the country's banks to oblige the head of state to make a proposal on her dismissal.

However, the court ruled that the professional experience of Gontareva meets the legal requirements.

During the hearing the court confirmed that Gontareva has an impeccable reputation. At the same time, her professional experience of work in leading Ukrainian and international financial institutions exceeds 20 years, including more than 11 years at senior positions.
