NABU Director: Evidence insufficient to suspect Supreme Court judges in Kniazev case

There is not enough evidence to notify the judges of the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court of suspicion in the bribery case against former President of the Supreme Court Vsevolod Kniazev, Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) Semen Kryvonos said in an interview with the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia (Mirror Weekly) publication.

In response to the question of why the investigation into the episode of possible illegal activity of the judges of the Grand Chamber of the Supreme Court, for whom envelopes with sums were designed and whose names were made public in the media, is not progressing, Kryvonos said: "As for the judges of the Grand Chamber, at this stage, in addition to the fact that the head of the Supreme Court was found with envelopes with names, and a number of judges had money, there is not enough evidence to announce suspicions. We should say this directly."

He did not provide more details about the amount of evidence that the investigation has at its disposal.

"But the main thing is that this evidence is enough to continue the investigation, and not close the case. We always have the opportunity to obtain additional facts of the involvement of certain judges in the corruption scheme, including those who were found to have funds. We understand the level of public interest and are actively working on this," the NABU head said.

As reported, on May 18, 2023, law enforcement officers caught Kniazev receiving an illegal benefit of $2.7 million for rulings in favor of businessman Kostiantyn Zhevaho in the case of the Poltava Mining and Processing Plant.

In early October, the investigation into the case was completed.

On January 30, 2024, the investigating judge of the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) extended the measure of restraint for Kniazev in the form of detention and reduced the amount of bail for the suspect to UAH 18.2 million. On January 31, Kniazev was released from custody on bail.

On May 27, the court ruled to remove the electronic bracelet from Kniazev.

On August 5, the High Council of Justice dismissed Kniazev from the position of judge of the Administrative Cassation Court as part of the Supreme Court for committing a significant disciplinary offense.

At the end of August 2024, the HACC began to consider the merits of the criminal case against Kniazev for accepting a bribe.
