Ukraine counts on enhancing EU's role in stabilization of situation in Donbas – Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko at a meeting with a delegation of the European Parliament that arrived to Kyiv to take part in the Second Session of the Parliamentary Committee of the Association between Ukraine and the European Union discussed bilateral relations and the settlement of the situation in Donbas.

"The president particularly noted the importance of international unity regarding further settlement of the situation in Donbas. Taking into account peacekeeping potential and experience of the EU, Ukraine counts on further enhancement of the EU’s role in the stabilization of the situation in Donbas," Poroshenko said at the meeting with members of the European Parliament (MEPs), the press service of the head of state reported on Thursday.

Poroshenko said that Ukraine was persistently implementing the program of reforms in compliance with the Association Agreement with the EU and required unity and solidarity of the EU regarding both the pace of reforms and the further settlement of the situation in Donbas.

"The unity of the European Union is vitally important for us," he said.

The head of state thanked the European MPs for consistently supporting Ukraine, first of all, in the protection of territorial integrity and sovereignty of our state and liberation of Ukrainian citizens illegally kept in Russia.

The parties discussed the progress of Ukraine in the fulfillment of obligations within the Plan of Actions on the Liberalization of the Visa Regime with the EU in the context of the Ukrainian Parliament’s consideration of a package of respective laws, acceleration of ratification of the Association Agreement and preparation to the introduction of the Ukraine-EU deep and comprehensive free trade area (DCFTA) on January 1, 2016.

"The MEPs assure that the European Parliament is ready to endorse the decision on granting the visa-free regime for Ukraine, in case the European Commission provides a positive assessment of Ukraine’s fulfillment of respective recommendations. The European Parliament is also willing to provide assistance in holding consultative referendum in the Kingdom of the Netherlands on the ratification of the Association Agreement with Ukraine," the press service said.

Availing himself of this opportunity, Poroshenko presented Order For Merits of the III grade to MEPs Andrej Plenkovic, Petras Austrevicius and Mark Demesmaeker for their significant personal contribution to the strengthening of the international authority of Ukraine, promotion of its historical heritage and modern achievements.
