Local elections in Donbas in line with Ukrainian constitution precondition for self-government - Rada chairman

The laws concerning Donbas passed by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Tuesday do not regulate its status and do not set up government agencies not stipulated by the Ukrainian constitution, Rada Chairman Volodymyr Hroisman has said.

"The decision that we have made stipulates that the organization of free democratic local elections in full compliance with the Ukrainian constitution and international standards is a precondition for putting the law on specifics of the exercise of self-government into effect," Hroisman said on Facebook on Tuesday evening.

"The law does not provide for either special status or agencies not stipulated by the Ukrainian constitution," he said.

The territories to which the law would apply have been determined not in order to set up a new border, he said.

"We have a state border, and we will fight for it," Hroisman said. "We determine areas that we have to reintegrate into normal life and wrest Ukrainian civilian population from the aggressor's paws," he said.
