Sixty-five children die, over 100 wounded during conflict – children's rights commissioner

The Ukrainian President's Commissioner for children's rights Mykola Kuleba has said that 127 children have been wounded and 65 have died during the conflict in Donbas.

"The official statistics of the Ukrainian authorities is 127 children were wounded in this conflict... Today, UN says it's 159 children. As for the deaths, it's difficult to say the exact number, but according to our assessment there are over 65 children who were murdered," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Monday.

According to him, hundreds of children have lost parents due to the conflict, and have suffered from psychological trauma, the separation of families, moving to other places and starvation.

"We think it's a crime against humanity, and such crimes can become evidence against the aggressor," Kuleba said.

He also was outraged by the fact that Russia, which is carrying out aggression against Ukraine, had suggested taking children from Donbas for treatment.

"Russian representatives have suggested taking our children in for treatment on numerous occasions. I think it's blasphemy. First, they send militants, supply militants with weapons, and then they're kindly suggesting treating our children," Kuleba said.

"What we have today is our children being illegally taken away without Ukraine's and legal representatives' consent. We all witnessed how orphan children were taken to Russia, and then we brought them back. [We also witnessed] recruiting children to illegal armed formations and involving them in military actions, as well endangering their lives and health via constant shootings. Ukraine persistently demands that Russia stop delivering weapons and [sending] militants, who are killing our children," he said.
