Poroshenko congratulates Ukrainians on occasion of Ukraine-EU Association Agreement taking effect

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has congratulated Ukrainians on the occasion of the launch of the provisional application of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement.

"Friends, from today the provisional application of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU is launched. I congratulate Ukraine!" the head of state wrote on his Twitter page early Saturday.

On his Facebook page he added that our next goal is to join the EU.

Some sections of the Association Agreement have started being implemented from November 1, 2014.

According to the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine, from November 1, 2014 the unilateral trade preferences for Ukraine continue being in effect. The preferences include the reduction of cancelation customs duties on goods from Ukraine and the regime will be in effect until December 31, 2015.

"The acceleration of adaption of Ukrainian laws to the EU requirements and standards in the correspondent areas will have the key importance for the implementation of advantages of the autonomous trade preferences," the ministry said.

The following sections of the Association Agreement have started being implemented: political dialogue and reforms; political association; cooperation and convergence in the area of foreign affairs and security policy; justice, freedom and security; economic and sectoral cooperation; financial cooperation; institutional, general and final provisions.

The Ukrainian government has approved and commenced the realization of the Association Agreement Implementation Plan. Profile ministries are drawing up plans on the implementation of the correspondent EU directives, and first joint meetings of the association bodies are being prepared. According to the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine, the inauguration meeting of the Ukraine-EU Association Council is scheduled for the middle of December.

On October 31, the presidents of Ukraine, the Council of Europe and the European Commission issued a joint statement before the start of the provisional application of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement.
