Parliament may hold extraordinary session to consider bill on constitutional amendments

The question of the readiness of an agreed bill on the introduction of amendments to the 2004 Constitution could be considered at an extraordinary session of parliament next week, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Rybak has said.

"Next week is the work of people's deputies in factions and committees. Perhaps, we'll have to make the decision next week, maybe it will be Tuesday or possibly Wednesday, depending on whether the representatives of all of the factions are ready to consider this agreed bill at an extraordinary session of the Verkhovna Rada," he said at a parliament meeting on Thursday.

Rybak also said that after a break in the parliament meeting and consultations with the leaders of factions, it had been decided not to create a temporary commission on a return to the 2004 Constitution.

"The leaders of all factions have agreed not to vote and not to set up such a temporary commission," he said.

Rybak said that the opposition would not vote for a draft resolution on the creation of such a commission.

Rybak closed the morning meeting. He also said that an evening meeting would not be held and that it was unlikely MPs would meet on Friday.
