Ukraine has urged the Customs Union to trade under the standards of the WTO and the CIS free trade area, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

"We are urging our partners to apply the rules of fair trade, as based on the provisions of the WTO on the agreement on a free trade area between the CIS countries. We for our part are ready to comply with these rules," the prime minister said while opening a government meeting on Wednesday.

He said that the government had always protected the interests of domestic producers and would do so in the future. At the same time, the premier urged Ukrainian producers to work together to improve cooperation with the Customs Union, in particular to bring their goods closer to the technical regulations of the association.

"Ukrainian producers need to work together, and work hard. They need to take into account the current realities. The Customs Union and its new rules are such a new reality. There will be no preferential treatment. But, we do not require it anyway," Azarov said.

The premier also warned against politicizing the recent difficulties with the customs clearance of Ukrainian goods on the Russian border, saying that there is no and there will be no trade war between the two countries.
