Regions Party MP suggests Ukraine abandon European integration policy

2 min read

MP Vadym Kolesnichenko of the Party of Regions has suggested Ukraine should give up its aspirations of joining the EU.

The lawmaker registered a relevant bill on amendments to the laws of Ukraine which deal with the country's foreign policy in the Verkhovna Rada, the Russian-speaking Ukraine Web site reported on Tuesday.

Kolesnichenko proposes cancelling the provisions of the law on the principles of domestic and foreign policy and the law on the foundations of national security, which say that Ukraine's strategic objective is to join the European Union.

He also suggests abolishing the decree of the president of Ukraine on approval of the strategy of Ukraine's integration into the European Union and some resolutions of the Cabinet dealing with European integration.

The MP believes that having a membership of the European Union as a strategic goal of Ukraine's foreign policy conflicts with the constitutional principle of popular sovereignty.

"The matter of foreign economic policy should be decided on exclusively by the Ukrainian people, since any integration entails a partial loss of state sovereignty. And ignoring the views of the people may lead to negative changes in the state and society," Kolesnichenko said.

As of today, there is no information on the official Web site of the Verkhovna Rada about the registration of Kolesnichenko's bill in parliament.
