Brussels does not believe that Ukraine is at crossroads between EU and Customs Union, says Yeliseyev

Ukraine's commissioner for foreign policy and integration processes and representative to the EU Kostiantyn Yeliseyev has said that Brussels does not believe that Kyiv is torn between the European Union and the Customs Union.

Ukraine and the EU agreed on an informal dialogue on cooperation with the Eurasian Customs Union, Yeliseyev said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

In his words, though the path to a united Europe is in the national interest of the state, Ukraine should develop a comprehensive partnership with the countries, which started the so-called Euro-Asian integration processes - the Eurasian Economic Community. "This is understood by our European partners, who took this event (the signing of the memorandum) calmly and rationally," he said.

Yeliseyev also drew attention to recent decisions of the G8 summit in Ireland, during which the leaders of these countries welcomed the Eurasian integration processes with the participation of the Russian Federation. "This confirms the fact that today the global players are trying to develop their position and the content of future relations with this association. Ukraine has already found such a status, and it does not conflict with its European aspirations," the Ukrainian diplomat said.

In addition, he said that Ukraine and the EU had agreed about an informal dialogue on cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Community, during which the two sides will discuss approaches and share information that is of mutual interest.
