The formation of state healthcare policy in Ukraine is carried out according to international strategies and principles, and the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), Health Minister of Ukraine Raisa Bohatyriova said during the 66th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva.

Having signed the United Nations Millennium Declaration, Ukraine made healthcare a priority of its social policy, and it is now implementing measures to increase the efficiency of its healthcare system, she said, adding that in fulfilling the reform program of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine is conducting a high quality modernization of the medical sector," the press service of the Health Ministry reported.

"We still have a long way to go, but even today we can mark noticeable successes in the protection of maternity and childhood, and fighting the HIV/AIDS and TB epidemics. I want to say that Ukraine is ready to share its experience regarding these questions with other WHO country members," the minister said.

According to Bohatyriova, one of the main tasks of the state is to ensure the country has a long-term policy of making a favorable environment to improve the health its citizens.

"We consider the step-by-step implementation of state program "Health 2020 – the Ukrainian Dimension" as the resolution of tasks that have been set at the national level in the healthcare sector. The program foresees preventive measures to reduce the level of infectious disease, in particular, through the implementation of the strategies proposed by the global summit on vaccination problems. It is also aimed at cutting the death rate from cancer and vascular diseases," Ukraine's health minister said.

Talking about the issues to which Ukrainian government pays special attention today, Bohatyriova mentioned the elimination of the negative influence of social health factors, equal access for all groups of the population to the medical aid, and ensuring the financial stability of the healthcare system and its transparency for society.

To resolve these problems Ukraine, first of all, must create a modern system of public health as a pledge of responsibility for the implementation of the constitutional rights of citizens.

As reported, Health Minister of Ukraine Raisa Bohatyriova has been elected Vice President of the World Health Assembly in the European region.

In Geneva, the health minister visited the headquarters of the World Health Organization, where she met with WHO Director General Margaret Chan. Bohatyriova also held talks with WHO Regional Director for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab, Deputy Executive Director of the UNAIDS Program Luiz Loures, and with the heads of the departments of health of several European countries.
