European Commission to comment on ECHR ruling on Tymoshenko after it studies it

Brussels is planning to comment on the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko after it carefully studies it, but said that the time has already come for Ukraine to demonstrate tangible progress in outstanding issues.

"We are aware of this decision. We are studying it and later today we will issue a joint statement by High Representative Catherine Ashton and European Commissioner Stefan Fule," Peter Stano, spokesperson for EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule, said at a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday, when asked by reporters whether this decision will be taken into account while making a decision in May regarding the further advancement of the Association Agreement and expectations from Ukraine.

Speaking about expectations from Ukraine, he said that "when it comes to the issue of selective justice, which is one of the areas in which the EU outlined its expectations from Ukraine," then "the Ukrainian authorities should fulfill their obligations."

"I said yesterday that we expect from the Ukrainian authorities the fulfillment of all of the commitments they undertook in their own plans and in the expectations that were formulated by the member states in the EU conclusions in December or in a joint statement issued after the EU-Ukraine summit in February. I think that it is clear what is expected from Kyiv, and what should be done. The time has already come to show tangible progress in all outstanding issues," Stano said.
