Azarov calls on local authorities to resolve financial problems in proper manner, not at rallies

The Ukrainian government is ready to resolve financial problems in regions that ask for assistance, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

"I would like to draw your attention to the fact that videos have appeared in the media in recent days showing rallies, usually organized in cities, which are headed by opposition representatives. At these rallies, with the participation of the leaders of these cities, demands are being made for the repayment of wage arrears," he said, while opening a government meeting in Kyiv on Wednesday.

He noted that the leaders of cities elected by the public were personally responsible for resolving all problems in the cities, including the timely payment of wages.

"It is the leaders of cities who should take care to provide incentives for entrepreneurship, business development, the functioning of enterprises, and for the filling of the budget. They are personally responsible for increasing budget revenues and for the legitimate, targeted use of these funds," Azarov said.

He said that there was a procedure approved by the legislation, under which local authorities, if there are any problems with the lack of funds, could ask for assistance from the regional or central authorities.

Azarov said that the government, "of course, will resolve the problems of those regions that ask for assistance, because these are the problems of people, rather than certain politicians."

He also called on politicians and local officials to stop practicing demagogy and the holding of rallies and start dealing with the affairs of their cities.
