Yanukovych proposes rise in fee for use of land to develop rural areas

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has suggested considering the possibility of increasing the fee for the use of land for the development of rural areas.

"The authorities need to take determined steps to promote Ukrainian agricultural products, especially grain, on new international markets," the president said during his address on the occasion of Farmer's Day, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.

"With this end in view, Ukraine's activity in work of international organizations that regulate the international markets of agricultural products should be significantly enhanced. Mechanisms for encouraging social responsibility of agribusinesses should be applied as widely as possible, and in particular, it is appropriate to explore the possibility of increasing the fee for the use of land, to expand financial opportunities of local governments to develop rural areas," he said.

Moreover, Yanukovych noted that along with strengthening the farming business, everything should be done to develop a new co-operative movement in the countryside.
