Cox-Kwasniewski observation mission to return to Ukraine right after parliamentary elections

The European Parliament's mission of former Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski and ex-European Parliament President Pat Cox to monitor the proceedings related to the criminal cases against former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko will resume right after the parliamentary elections and continue until the end of the year.

Everyone whom this may concern has considered the mission's progress report, Kwasniewski said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

"We are speaking about [returning to Ukraine] after the elections, after October 28. I think we will need a few days to consider the elections results and then we will depart for Kyiv. We have not scheduled the exact date," he said.

While commenting on the fact that the mission's report is ready, although they do not want to publish it, the politician noted that the intermediate report has been passed to President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz.

"But considering the fact that the election campaign is underway in Ukraine, we don't want the document to be used. We will resume our work after the elections and it will be clear then when the final report will be ready. There is no secrecy [about the report]," he said.

According to Kwasniewski, the general conclusions from the intermediate report have also been passed to all heads of political groups in the European Parliament. In addition, the observers met with the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs and delegates of the observation mission for the parliamentary elections in Ukraine.

"Everyone knows our position. We have passed the report to everyone whom it may concern, but this is an intermediate document, as we will continue our mission after the elections," the politician said.

While speaking about the observation mission's tasks after the elections, Kwasniewski said that they will monitor the process of reform implementation in the legal sphere, the results of amending the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, which will take effect on November 19, the implementation of a new law on prosecutor's office, which "is extremely important for Ukraine's future."

"It will be a very important and deep change, as it will change the whole legal system and bring it closer to European standards. And, of course, we will keep monitoring the cases of Yulia Tymoshenko and Yuriy Lutsenko, and we will continue our dialogue with the government, the president, Tymoshenko, and the opposition," he said.

Kwasniewski also confirmed that the European Parliament's mandate "is absolutely clear – we will continue this mission until the end of the year."

"By the end of the year we have to fund a solution and present the final report to the European Parliament," he added.
