Cox-Kwasniewski monitoring mission suspended for Ukraine's election period

2 min read

The monitoring of court proceedings with regard to ex-Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and ex-Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko by Ex-Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski and ex-European Parliament President Pat Cox has been suspended for the period of the Ukrainian parliamentary election campaign. The monitoring will resume when the election is over.

The decision was made at the hearing of the Cox-Kwasniewski intermediate report at the Brussels conference of European Parliament presidents on Tuesday, European Parliament President Martin Schulz said.

He said the mission was suspended so that the two European politicians would not be personally involved in the election campaign.

The mission will continue in the post-election period, when the formation of the new government starts, he said.

The main goal of the mission is not election monitoring but improving Ukraine's humanitarian situation, Schultz said.

He also said he would inform Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov about their decision by phone on Wednesday.

The European Parliament appointed Cox and Kwasniewski as its observers in Tymoshenko court proceedings. The mission started on June 11 under an agreement of Azarov and Schultz.

The mission mandate was broadened later on. The monitors also directed their attention to Lutsenko and ex-Acting Defense Minister Valeriy Ivashchenko and preparations for the parliamentary election in Ukraine.

Earlier reports said that the Cox-Kwasniewski report would be presented at the European Parliament presidents' conference in the attendance of Schultz and political group leaders.

Ukraine will elect a new parliament on October 28.
