Suspects in stealing UAH 100 mln during spent nuclear fuel storage construction to face trial – SAPO

A prosecutor from the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) has sent an indictment to court against the director general of the separate division of the state-owned enterprise National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom, the head of the estimate-contract department of Energoatom, and the heads and employees of the legal department for causing almost UAH 100 million in damages to the enterprise, based on the materials of the pretrial investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU).

"During the pretrial investigation, it was established that in December 2020, a contract was concluded between Energoatom division Atomprojectengineering and a predetermined private company, bypassing open tenders, for the completion of the construction of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility," SAPO said on its Telegram channel on Monday.

With the aim of misappropriating Energoatom's funds, the suspects tripled the contract price from UAH 421 million to UAH 1.497 billion through additional agreements, specifically adding the supply of a radiation control system.

The contractor company purchased this equipment at market value and then resold it to Energoatom at a much higher price in 2021. As a result, Energoatom overpaid about UAH 100 million.

As reported, on October 25, 2023, five individuals were notified of suspicion of committing a crime under Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (misappropriation of another's property in a particularly large amount by an official through abuse of office in a prior conspiracy by a group of persons). They face seven to 12 years in prison with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years and with confiscation of property.
