For domestic needs, we only need about 25% of harvested grain, rest needs to be exported – Shmyhal

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal says that about 25% of the harvested grain is enough for Ukraine's internal needs, and the rest needs to be exported.

"Bridges should be built on our western border now, and not walls. This, first of all, concerns Ukrainian agricultural exports. We need wide transit routes for food exports. This is important for the sustainability of our economy. This is important for the world, because this is global food security," Shmyhal said at a government meeting on Tuesday.

According to the prime minister, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy forecasts this year's harvest at more than 79 million tonnes, which is 10% more than last year.

"A good harvest means that Ukraine will retain its strategic importance as a guarantor of global food security. For domestic needs, we only need about 25% of the harvested grain, the rest needs to be exported. Because these are resources for farmers, this is foreign exchange earnings for the state, and this is food for starving countries," he noted.

In this regard, the government counts on the effectiveness of the mechanism proposed by Ukraine for verification and control of Ukrainian agricultural exports.
