Energy Minister Herman Haluschenko called on European colleagues to support Ukraine's candidacy to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

As the Ministry of Energy said on the Telegram channel on Monday, Haluschenko made such a proposal during an informal meeting of EU energy and transport ministers in Stockholm on February 27.

"The Minister of Energy announced that Ukraine is nominating its candidacy for the IAEA Board of Governors for 2023-2025 and called on the meeting participants to join the discussion of this issue and support the Ukrainian application," the ministry said.

During the meeting, the Minister of Energy thanked the EU representatives for the 10th package of sanctions against Russia and stressed the need not only to maintain pressure on the aggressor, but also to extend it to all areas of Russian energy, in particular the nuclear industry, the ministry informed.

According to Haluschenko, the time has come to introduce sanctions against Rosatom.

"It's time to go ahead and impose sanctions against Rosatom, which covers up the nuclear terrorism of the Russian regime and sponsors the Russian army. We welcome the decision of Finland, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic to refuse cooperation with Russia in the nuclear industry and urge other partners to take this step," the minister said.

According to the IAEA, the Board of Governors is one of the agency's two governing bodies, along with the annual general conference of IAEA member states.

The Board reviews the financial statements, program and budget of the IAEA and makes recommendations to the General Conference on them. It reviews applications for agency membership, approves safeguards agreements, and publishes IAEA safety standards. He also appoints the director general of the agency, who is approved by the general conference.
