European Commission successfully tests Ukrainian gas network's readiness for winter

The national gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy has said representatives of the Joint Research Center of the Directorate General of the European Commission have successfully tested readiness of the Ukrainian gas transportation system (GTS) for the new heating season.

On Wednesday representatives of the European Commission together with representative of Naftogaz, Ukrtransgaz and the Energy Ministry explored the scenarios of possible crisis situations with the supply of natural gas to Ukraine under the methodology and standards of the European Union, which are also enshrined in Ukraine's law on the natural gas market, Naftogaz reported on its website.

The tests were aimed at identifying risks for the Ukrainian gas transportation system, analyzing the probability of crisis events and their consequences, as well as upgrading the hydraulic model that allows simulating situations in the GTS taking into account the real operating conditions of the system, the gas company said.

Naftogaz pointed out that the results of the study will provide the foundation for developing a set of preventive measures that significantly increase the level of the GTS preparedness for emergencies.

In addition, representatives of the European Commission provided recommendations for the improvement of the National Action Plan (equivalent to a crisis management plan in EU member states) and the Rules for the Safety of Natural Gas Supply (equivalent to a preventive action plan in the EU Member States).

The beneficiary of the study is the Energy Ministry, the study was carried out at the expense of the European Commission as part of technical assistance. The project has been implemented for two years and as a whole is designed for three years, Naftogaz said.
