Owners of bankrupt banks who do not want to return debts benefit from the campaign against the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) organized by Leader of the Batkivschyna Party Yulia Tymoshenko, while it harms Ukrainians, NBU Governor Valeriya Gontareva has said.

"Tymoshenko who gathers depositors of bankrupt banks for rallies frankly deceives Ukrainians… Several lawmakers have joined Yulia Tumoshenko and they are trying to destabilize the economic situation to make the most of it in politics. Owners of bankrupt banks also benefit from populist slogans," she said in a statement posted on the NBU's website.

Gontareva said that the NBU has been under the planned political and information attack for over one month.

She said that the NBU and the Individuals Deposit Guarantee Fund sent over 3,300 applications concerning crimes with the total sum of damage of around UAH 300 billion to law enforcement agencies.

"Owners of bankrupt banks removed this money from the financial institutions to invest them in development of their business empires. Their banks went bankrupt. Depositors suffered. However, their main business brings profit and their names continue being in the ratings of richest Ukrainians. The shareholders are to be punished for removal of the funds," Gontareva said.

She said that if the political promises of the organizers of this campaign are realized, Ukraine would return to 1990s and the money printing will start.

"When Tymoshenko was prime minister the NBU provided UAH 84 billion of refinancing to banks and around UAH 12 billion for recapitalization of banks. The major part of the funds was removed from banks by their owners and would not be returned to the state," she said.
