Engie will start direct gas supplies to Ukrainian consumers - Vitrenko

France's Engie (formerly GDF Suez SA) is entering the Ukrainian market and is delivering gas directly to consumers, Chief Commercial Officer of Naftogaz Ukrainy Yuriy Vitrenko has said.

"This is one of the concrete results of our reforms in the gas market. We, in fact, not only in words, are creating a transparent and competitive gas market in Ukraine in the interests of Ukrainian consumers. Until recently it seemed impossible," he wrote on his Facebook page.

"We hope for a speedy adoption of the European code of balancing. Then there will be even more such companies in our market, the market will be more transparent and competitive," he said.

According to the official website of Engie, the company plans to strengthen its position in the Ukrainian market at the expense of work of its subsidiary Engie Energy Management Ukraine (established in summer 2016). Its core business will be gas imports, transportation, storage and sale to large industrial consumers.

"The potential second step is trade in the electricity market," the report reads.

In 2015 Engie delivered about 3.5 billion cubic meters to Ukraine, primarily to Naftogaz Ukrainy.
